French Chic is about so many things. It is about style, of course. But it is not only about style. French Chic is about so much more than style, something that only a native French woman knows about and can teach you.
French Chic is also a story about love. Yes. Love. Love of beautiful things. Love of clothes. Love of quality.
Chic French women love their clothes and take great care of them. For one thing, you won't catch us throwing our clothes on the floor when getting undressed.
This is just not done. Ceci est impensable! (this is unthinkable).
As I said, French Chic is about love.
Chic French women buy fewer but good quality clothes. This is why it makes sense for us to look after them. They will look good for longer and they can be worn more often. This shows respect not only for your clothes, but your budget and, of course, yourself.
Showing love to your clothes and other belongings is to take care of them, protecting them, washing or dry-cleaning them according the instructions, ironing them carefully and by folding or hanging them neatly back into your Tidy Closet.
As I always advise, at any time that you feel overcome by the deep change you want to make in your style, just take one small step.
This small step today can be to show some love and respect to your clothes. And you can do this simply by protecting them.
For this, you will need an apron.
Aprons? You ask.
Yes, you heard right. Aprons!
Aprons are viewed as old-fashioned nowadays. Something your mother and grand-mother used to wear.
And my reply, as a French woman is: Et alors? (so what?)
An apron is a good thing to have in the home. It will protect your clothes from stains when you cook, clean or do other messy tasks. You can have one apron for cooking, one for gardening, one for the housework and any other task that can potentially stain your clothes.
The photo at the top of this post is my own apron, one that my maman gave me.
I prefer aprons that have a bib such as this one. It protects the upper area of your clothes. For cooking, this is essential, so as not to get your top splashed by your delicious meal simmering away on the hob. The hob and counter are at waist height, so whether we cook or wash the dishes, we will get splashed from waist height.
It also has a pocket, although for cooking it is more decorative than useful.
However, for gardening or cleaning, a large pocket at the front of your apron is very useful to carry bits and bobs around, such as packets of seeds or a duster.
I am a woman of many passions. Cooking and baking are two of them. I wouldn't dream of cooking or baking without first putting one of my aprons on. I have a drawer in my kitchen, under the worktop, where I store them. After cooking, I remove my apron, I fold it lengthways and roll it up. The strings are then rolled around the apron to keep it in place. I then lay it inside the drawer, with the others. Tout simplement.
Ne rendez pas votre tablier! (do not give up!)
Show you care. Wear an apron.
