Today, let's venture into a world of fantasy, a world where closets 'fit for a princess' are the norm. Imagine that you own an extravagant closet such as the one on this photo. All the walls would be covered from top to bottom with fanciful drawers, bespoke
wardrobes, perfect shelves and gleaming mirrors. In the centre would be a decadent chaise longue where you would sit, lounge or rest at ease, whilst admiring your closet and its hidden treasures. Beautiful sparkling chandeliers hung from the high ceiling would cast their magical light onto your neatly arranged clothes, high heeled shoes, leather handbags and sparkly jewellery.
Wouldn't it be pure pleasure to open the doors to this cornucopia? For sure, you would feel special and beautiful.
However, most of us have modest means and space. So we have to make do with small closet space, a few drawers and shelves. But we can still dream, non?
However, there are still things we can do to feel like a princess.
1/ Appreciate what you have
Appreciation is underrated in my opinion. We get so used to our things and possessions that we lose sight of their value. By value, I don't just mean monetary. I mean usefulness too. We may get dressed mindlessly in the mornings.
When was the last time you stopped, looked at this blouse or dress and thought: "Yes, I really like you, I love your fabric/colour/style. You make me look feminine/slim/younger/beautiful. You make feel good/confident/chic/elegant"?
A piece could have been bought for only a few pounds, maybe in the sales, but if you wear it often and look good in it, why not appreciate it? To you, this item will be worth much more than its price tag. The next time you use it, look at it with renewed interest. Show your appreciation by looking at it while giving a smile. Do this every day, with each item that you put on. Do this with your closet too. Try to appreciate the space that you have, every drawer, shelf, hanging closet. Appreciate it as if it was the most fabulous closet ever made. You may not have the closet of a princess but you can dream. This will bring joy to you, I promise.
2/ Make the most of your closet
Now that you appreciate what you do have, instead of bemoaning what you don't have, there is another thing you can do. Try to work out how to better tidy, organise and display your clothes and accessories. Make the most of your open shelves by displaying only your nicest things. Screw in some hooks on the edge of your shelves to hang your jewellery from. Move shelves up or down so that more space is used. Fold your clothes neatly so that they are more attractive and inviting, rather than a jumbled up mess. Make use of the dead space that is the top of your wardrobe by using attractive storage baskets or boxes. You may not be able to afford a bespoke closet but you can use your imagination and what you have at hand to make the most of it.
3/ Only keep the nicest stuff
Princesses always have superb clothes, shoes and jewellery. You can too. Once in a while, twice a year for instance (Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter), take the time to review and declutter your wardrobe. Remove all the unwanted, unloved and ugly. And remember, just because you wear something often doesn't make it an absolute right to keep it. For instance, if your outfit of choice is a ripped pair of jeans and a t-shirt that is four sizes too big, isn't it time to reconsider whether you should keep them? Have a good long look in your (full-length) mirror. Ask yourself why you shouldn't deserve to have only nice stuff in your closet. The decision is yours.
4/ Bring in an extravagant piece of furniture
When you have finished decluttering and sprucing up your closet, you may find that something is missing. To truly feel like a princess in your closet, think about introducing an elegant piece of furniture, such as a chaise longue, banquette (or even an extravagant pink or purple velvet stool?). Make sure you give this piece the pride of place. Et voilà, Madame.
5/ Sit in and admire
All your hard work is now done. Sit back in your wonderful 'fauteuil' of choice. Admire. Enjoy. You truly deserve it. Why? Because I said so.
