Don't you find that people are complicated?
Yes we are.
We tend to complicate things that are simple.
We make it difficult for ourselves when really, simplicity is the answer.
I find that when you have a problem, the best solution is always the simplest one.
So it is in style. Never more so in French Chic.
I mention KISS, or Keep It Simple Sister, repeatedly in my books and my posts because if you ignore this fundamental step, you miss what French Chic is about. It is all about simplicity.
In order to keep this post simple, I shall answer the question that matters to you today:
How can you keep your style simple but chic?
1/ The first thing to do is to have less. (Time to declutter, perhaps?). Yes, fewer clothes, shoes and accessories help to keep things simple. Fewer fashion mistakes will be made. You won’t be tempted to try things that won’t work.
2/ There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Just keep to the tried and tested combinations that work for you. That’s where your classics and essentials come in. Dress them up or down, it’s up to you. Classics always help keep things simple.
3/ Only have one focal point in your whole outfit in your:
- Jacket or coat
Choose only one main area of interest. More than one will lose its impact.
4/ Go for understatement. I don’t mean frumpy. Nor jeans with everything. Understatement means showing some restraint in what you wear, your makeup, your hair, your accessories.
- False eyelashes for daytime (a tad "de trop" and intimidating for daytime, je pense, non?)
- Big hair extensions
- Logos that can be read at 50 paces
- Hoop earrings wider than a baby's head
- Noisy bangles that announce your arrival 5 minutes before you appear
- Handbags deep enough to hide a medium-sized dog
(Hoping to bring a bit of humour to your day, while giving you a few tips).
I have learned over the years to keep everything as simple as I can, not only in what I wear, but also in my life. It works. Please give it a try.
