The days are getting shorter, the sky is greyer and the temperature is cooler. You feel that you are under a dark cloud and you're cold. You've lost your mojo Madame. To make things worse, your go-to jeans are in the wash. There's nothing you want to wear other
than black, black and more black. After all, thats what French women wear, n'est-ce pas?
Well oui, bien sûr, but there's a way to wear black that doesn't look as if you've given up altogether. That's why French women wear black and look chic and others wear black and look invisible or depressed. Ok, I may be a bit harsh here, but you understand me I'm sure. Don't worry, I've had my fair share of black days too.
Well, today is not the time to reflect on dark days but to steer away from them. D'accord? Are you on board?
Très bien. I'm going to give you five easy ways to lift your spirits the French Chic way.
1- Special Treatment
First of all, haul yourself to the bathroom for a spot of TLC. I know, I know. It's hard today; so, dont think about it, just do it. Get to the bathroom. Run a lovely warm bath and soak your troubles away.
Next, take your time and give yourself a mask, body scrub, rub lotion on your heels and polish your nails. Whatever you choose, give yourself a good pampering.
After an hour or so of this special treatment, either your troubles will not seem as bad as you first thought this morning, or you will feel better equiped to deal with them. In my past life as an office worker, I used to do this most Saturday mornings as a weekly routine. As I had neither the time nor the inclination during the week, Saturdays used to be for me. Why not make this your routine too?
Now, put on some light makeup to outline your eyes or your lips. Nothing too much, less is more. Maybe some light foundation to even out your skin. Apply light blusher, a coat of brown mascara, maybe a thin eyeliner, light coat of rouge à lèvres. Blow dry your hair to show yourself that you care.
Chic French women enjoy taking time for self-care.
2- Petits Dessous
This second step is a French woman's absolute favourite. Put on your best underwear. In France, we call them 'les petits dessous' (for women). Nothing mismatched here, nor anything from cheap stores. We're going all out for luxury. Something exquisite, a present perhaps from your partner. Choose lingerie that makes you feel ultra special (you are, by the way!) and beautiful (and that too). Don't cheat here by wearing your second best set because your best is reserved for Valentine's Day! You can wash it delicately tomorrow, you know. Just wear it for goodness sake!
Ok, now look at yourself in your full length mirror. Stand up straight and admire yourself. This may be tough for some of you, but hear me out. Smile at your reflection. Don't think of this as a useless exercise. Believe it or not, this is important. You are beautiful! Say it out loud and say your name too. Scream it if you have too. This exercise is very cathartic.
Chic French women have known this for decades. Beautiful lingerie and feeling good go hand in hand.
Next, put on your skirt/top or a dress. Not jeans please. If you can, avoid trousers. Wearing a skirt or dress makes you feel feminine and sexy, dont you think? It changes your outlook. Avoid black today, as we talked about earlier. Wear a colour that compliments your face. After all, if you've read my books, you'll only have those in your closet. Finish off with high heels. Sexy heels. Shoes that scream Oh Baby! You have a pair of those I am sure. Put them on. Feel the French Chic in you today.
4 - Relaxation
This one is up to you. You can either choose to spend time with your family/friends or spend it by yourself. If in company, be fully there and happy. Be loving and supportive to all.
If opting to go it alone, you could walk into a high end boutique and try on their new seasonal pieces. You don't have to buy anything nor blow your yearly budget on a coat. However, just seeing yourself swathed in great quality clothes may inspire you to update and/or improve your wardrobe.
You could go to your favourite Salon de Thé or coffee shop. Order their signature brew and lose yourself in your journal. Write down your goals for the coming year. Try to avoid writing dark thoughts today. Concentrate on positive goals, either personal or professional/business. Now and again, stop writing. Look up and spend time people-watching. It can be cathartic. People-watching from the terraces of cafés is a French pastime by the way. You don't have to be busy-busy all the time. That's why people are so stressed nowadays. They forget to chill and do nothing for a little while. Or at least do an activity they thoroughly enjoy. And please, no guilt about not spending part of your weekend cleaning, grocery shopping or the obligatoy trip to your in-laws. Looking after yourself is very important. Think of it as a life jacket. In boats and planes they tell you to put yours on first before helping anybody else. Heed this advice today.
Lastly, give the gift of a smile. Be all smiles to everyone today. Not only will you make a huge difference to other people but to yourself too. From the bank cashier to the parking attendant, from the bus driver to the people on the street. Smile, smile, smile until your smile muscles hurt. Then smile some more.
