Have you just noticed that it's the end of January but the state of your closet is still dire? Some might even call it a calamity. You started with the best of intentions of course. Or was is just pie in the sky? I don't know. You tell me, Missie. The truth is, and it sure hurts,
you've done nothing or next to nothing about it. Sure, you started throwing a few old socks away. You considered giving this treatment to the whole closet, mind you. Then you thought better of it: Game of Thrones was on. Important things first.
I understand fully. We tend to order things in order of importance. Believe me, I've been there. Of course I have. I've been in your shoes. I've had my fair share of untidiness and clutter. And I hated every single minute of it. I had my own list of excuses too. But then, I reworked this list and changed the order a bit. You see, I don't view decluttering as a great joy to take on, for the sake of it. However, I find having my clothes organised in a neat closet most relaxing. Peace of mind and low stress levels are really beneficial to me. So I put these at the top of my list. TV last.
Let's talk a bit about the "mitigating circumstances" you fall back on in order to avoid doing your decluttering. You have your favourites, don't you? Those that always get you out of doing what you don't want to do. You really want, or feel you should (ouch!), sort out your closet. However, your various excuses always get in the way, don’t they?
Lack of time is one that keeps coming back again and again.
The "I can’t be bothered" is an old favourite too.
Another one is of course the “I don’t know how”. There is nothing wrong with not knowing something. But you can figure it out. Ever heard of the internet?
Finally, but there are myriads more, is the "I have other things to do."
You feel powerless to fight against these excuses. Once they have their claws into you, they kind of take over. You surrender. You are filled with regrets later on, bien sûr. But you have succumbed to the negative, untidy chatter going round in your head.
Do you find it painful to grind to a halt, when all you planned to do was to push on? You know that only once you've shifted all your excuses, can you then take action, do what you should and schedule to do.
Don't you wish there was some kind of solution to your problem?
Don't you long for a way to declutter these excuses once and for all?
So now you’re asking me: what can I do about it? How can I shift these excuses? I really do have better things to do with my time, I really can't be bothered and I don't know how!
There are a number of ways to help you do this. Today I'll share one with you.
My quick solution
The tricky thing is that we aren’t always aware of making these excuses. Once you are fully aware, this is the time that you can do something about them.
- Question yourself:
The next time you think you have better things to do other than decluttering your closet:
Ask yourself "what are those things?"
Why would they be better for you in the long run?
Yes, sure, watching your fave program or spending half an hour on WhatsApp is really entertaining in the short term. No doubt about that. However, using that time to remove all your unwanted stuff from your closet will be more beneficial to you and your sanity eventually.
- Think of the benefits:
Your stress levels will come down
Your mood will lift
Your closet will smell better
You’re no longer embarrassed to ask your friends to walk into your bedroom or stay over You'll save time by finding what you want to wear straight away
Your clothes will be in a good state to wear, no longer wrinkled
Your good mood, instead of your bad mood, will spread to the rest of the household,
