T'is the season of the sales. The sales are here and more are on their way.
Are you, chic lady, prepared for them?
Let's talk clothes shopping today.
Many of my clients and readers have shared that they find sales shopping an absolute nightmare.
They have a point.
Many of us have heard about and witnessed the pushing, the shoving, the impatience and the downright rudeness of people during the sales. I can't understand it. What is it about saving a few dollars/pounds that make some people forget all about civility, good manners and decorum?
This spoils the experience and joy of making fantastic savings on our favourite pieces. Unfortunately for you, I can't stop people being rude and aggressive during the sales.
But what I can do is give you tips on how to be prepared for a long day shopping, so that you come back home, loaded with pieces that you love.
Here are my top ten sales shopping tips for you:
1- Audit your wardrobe before setting off
Find out what you need, and what you want. What is missing in your wardrobe to make it work better for you? Classic pieces? Basic items?
2- Make a list of what you want and need to buy
Describe each piece as best as you can. Add many details, such as colour, type of fabric, length, style etc. Think about how much you are prepared to spend on this item. This will depend on whether this is a classic or basic piece (as a rule of thumb, you would spend more on a good quality timeless classic than on an easily replaceable basic).
3- Do a reconnaissance trip
Go to the shops before the sales so that you know where to find those pieces during the sales. This will save you time and frustration.
4- Think of your budget before setting off
How much do you want to or can you spend? Over-stretching your budget may make you stressed and unhappy.
5- Wear a comfortable outfit
You will try things on so wear something that you can easily slip in and out of 'en vitesse' (quickly). Avoid wearing clothes with many buttons that would need to be fastened and unfastened in the changing rooms.
6- Wear flat shoes for comfort
You may have to walk in and out of a number of shops in your town or in a large shopping mall. Flat shoes will make your shopping trip a breeze. Hey, you can even count this as a workout. Put on your step counter ;0)
7- Bring a small bottle of water with you
It is deceiving how long we can spend walking around or waiting in line. Have a little drink to avoid dehydration and a niggly headache. Have a little mint or a banana for some energy if needed.
8- Be prepared to walk away if you can't find what you're looking for
I know it is not always possible, sometimes impossible, to find the exact piece that we want. However, settling for something that is not right at all will be a waste of money. Keep this item on your list and it will pop up one day.
9- Avoid the first day of sales
It will be madness and mayhem (see above). Alternatively, buy online on the first day for that special piece you must have.
ps: If things are getting a bit aggressive around you in a shop, don't stay there as things can escalate quickly. Just walk away.
10- Try things on
Try everything on, check every detail and angle, lift your arms and legs, sit down, bend down, walk around...
I know I said I had ten tips but here is an extra one:
