Do you think that your clothes don't suit you, don't fit you and certainly don't flatter you in any way, shape or form?
Do you feel that there is no love lost between your stuff and you, and that it shows in what you wear?
If so, I think that your style could do with a French Chic lift, don't you?
If you answered YES! to these three questions, then please read on for my TOP TEN TIPS that will give your style a French Chic lift:
The first thing to do is declutter your closet. Heard me say this before? Well, I will keep reminding you until you bite the bullet and do it, mon amie. ;0)
a- Remove all the pieces that don't fit you.
Are your clothes so tight they create lumps and bumps?
Are they so large they hide your curves?
In either case, get rid of them.
b -Remove all the pieces that don't suit you.
This is a given.
Do your clothes make you look like you raided your daughter's closet?
Do they make you look fifty years older? Hint hint, if the bus driver asks you for your bus pass, you are dressing too old!
Do you look like a 60s hippy who is living in a commune, with no access to hot water? I know this is not kind but, sometimes, we need to be shocked into taking action.
c- Remove all the pieces that you don't love.
Why hang on to things that do not make your heart sing? Do a purge. You will feel so much lighter and happier for it. Good things will flow into your life because you have made space for them. A bit woo woo, maybe but, I assure you, many women have reported that amazing things happen for them after a good decluttering. Are YOU ready for this?
Try on the pieces that are left after decluttering. Some dire pieces will no doubt have slipped through and gone on to the 'To Keep' pile. Remove them. As above, if they no longer fit you or suit you and you do not love them, please remove them forthwith.
3- SHAPE UP!
Knowing your body shape really is paramount to dressing well and chic.
For instance, let’s say you think you are a rectangle when you are really an apple. Mistaking your shape like this will make you choose clothes that are wrong for your silhouette. Instead of tops that skim over your tummy area, you will be wearing belts that show off your larger tummy. This is opposite to the style objectives for your apple shape. So, find out what your body shape is.
If you don’t know how to do this, my free Shape Up! ecourse will help you to do just that.
4- STYLE OBJECTIVES
Once you know your body shape, the next thing you MUST do is find out the style objectives for your body shape. Don´t wear what you want to wear, only wear what flatters you. This discipline is one of the secrets of chic French women. If you don´t know the style objectives for your body shape, don´t worry, I have ecourses for each body shape which tell you exactly this. Don’t be afraid of discovering your style objectives. They will give you all the specifics you need to know for dressing well for your body shape and how to do it. I can´t emphasise how important this is. Once you know your style objectives, it will be like a light going on. So, no more dressing in the dark ;0)
After knowing your style objectives, look at what you have left in your closet after decluttering. Which pieces do you now need in order to make your wardrobe work for your body shape and your lifestyle?
Example: Did you discover that you are apple shaped? Then, you will need bootcut trousers/jeans. These will flatter your lower body much more than your skinny jeans, which I hope you got rid of.
Write a list of the new items you now need. Describe them well and add as many details as you can. This will help you to only buy the exact items that you are looking for. If you don´t know how to create a workable French Chic wardrobe, there is plenty of advice in the last part of my ebookThe Tidy Closet.
Shop, yes, but I don't mean the mindless stroll through shops and malls, that make you settle for items that are not what you're looking for. Instead of first reading your list and looking for these specific items in the shops, you do the opposite of what you should do. You walk into shops and browse through the rails, hoping to find the Holy Grail of sorts. You are poised and ready to buy, so you will pick out pieces that look okay on the hanger. But will they be a wow for you? Probably not. Did I say you have to buy what suits you, not what you think looks good on the rail? Well, the truth needs repeating, often.
So, be prepared. Know your style objectives, write your well detailed list of what you need and follow it. Don't settle for items that are not what you're looking for.
This follows on from the previous shopping tip. Your main criteria come in three parts:
- Buy what fits you
- Buy what suits you
- Buy what you love.
Invest in a full length mirror. This will ensure that you see your whole outfit before setting out. Do you know those bathroom mirrors that let you see only the top part of you? Well, by only looking at the top part of your outfit, you will miss the vital part, which is the whole ensemble. 'Ensemble' is a French word which means 'together, pieces that go together, a suit'. So, it is vital that you see the whole outfit, from your head down to your toes. Only looking at your top half or your bottom half just won't do. It may look right here but wrong there. So, if you haven't yet got one, get a full length mirror.
Look at yourself in the full length mirror.
Which response do you get from your heart? A 'wow Mama!'? Or more of a 'meh, not sure...'?
If this is the latter, your outfit needs a lift somehow. So, at a glance, what quick and simple improvement/s could you make? For example, wear heels instead of flats, add a belt on your trousers, wear a colourful scarf, limit the colours you're wearing, put a dash of lipstick. Sometimes, all you need is just one simple adjustment.
You should always be looking to improve yourself. Whether it is your style or your skills or just yourself. If you aren´t working on yourself, you become stagnant, your style halts and can even decline. Don´t let this happen to you, mon amie. You deserve the world. I have many courses designed to help you improve your style and yourself. Take a look on this website under 'ecourses'.
10- SMILE ?
Nothing finishes off an outfit like a smile. Always wear your best one, don´t keep it hidden for special occasions. A great smile improves the more you use it!
