My previous post showed the types of stripes that are kind to your figure. In this article, I shall demonstrate the stripes that you should avoid, if your intention is to look great, chic and elegant.
So let's analyse these eight striped items (above) and see the reasons why they are a no-go for many women.
1/ The horizontal stripes of this top will widen and shorten you, while uncovering your tummy due to its short cut. Unless you are a small size with a tummy as flat as a washboard, this top is not for you.
2/ Here, in addition to the widening horizontal stripes, we are seeing a peplum. If you already have curvy hips or are plus sized, my advice is to avoid peplums like the plague. They will only add unnecessary width to your body.
3/ This one is supposed to be a dress, but by the looks of it,we could be forgiven for thinking that it is a top. From the narrow neckline to the wider hemline, this dress will give you a pear shape, or widen your hips and thighs even more if you are already a pear. This unflattering shape is compounded by the wide horizontal stripes. You have been warned.
4/ This dress is well designed for a slim rectangular shape. The side panels add a contrast to the front panel and thus create a curvier bust. The two thick black stripes at the waistline draw the eye there, which is tricked into seeing a neat small waist. However, for larger women, the thick vertical stripes will show off the widest points of your body, in an unflattering way.
5/ So many stripes, from top to bottom, even the collar is striped! If you wear a similar striped top, at least you can wear a jacket over it in a solid colour to alleviate this heavy look. With a jacket, you can't do that. Apart from being mistaken for a penitentiary escapee, this jacket will not do much for any woman's figure. The only redeeming feature are the silver buttons.
6/ This jacket, being cut in a loose and square style, will not enhance your figure. Like the previous one, there is no visual break in the stripes. The eye will go from side to side and see your figure as square and wide. To avoid if this is not the shape you want to project.
7/ Stick of rock anyone?
Ok, joke aside, when I first saw these 'pants' in magazines and shops, I thought it was a joke. A joke on us, women. Not sure who came up with this idea, but honestly, go back to the drawing board, will you!
Right, where to start? First, these are leggings, need I say more? Second, look at the way the stripes swirl around the legs, in a funfair kind of way, enough to make your head spin. Third, the legs will end up looking kind of gnarly, even if they are slim. Fourth, chic and elegant? Nope, no way, no matter your size, your shape, your age. My verdict: epic fail.
8/ This skirt is of a flattering style and length. However, if you are larger at your hips and thighs, this look will make you appear wider at those very areas, due to the wide black stripes. Only opt for this style if you are fairly slim.
I hope that the above will help you make the right choices when it comes to wearing stripes. Vertical stripes tend to be flattering to most women, while horizontal ones can be a minefield. Always give a garment a long hard look, first on the hanger and then on you. You don't have to follow each and every trend. Some trends should be avoided at all costs, sometimes because of your shape, your size or even your height, while other trends should be avoided by all women as some are frankly ridiculous. If clothes are not doing their job of making you look great, then what is their point of being? I rest my case.
