According to the grande dame of fashion herself, Coco Chanel, "Fashion is architecture. It is a matter of proportions". She was absolutely right and who can disagree with Madame Chanel?
We all know that keeping everything in proportion makes for a pleasing visual appeal. When you ignore this, things do not work together as well as they should.
For instance, picture an outfit made of a calf-length dress, knee length coat and flat shoes.
What about a wide full-length coat on a petite frame?
I am sure I do not have to give you a full-blown explanation as to what is wrong with these two outfits. You already know that their proportions are just wrong.
The thing is, proportions do matter in fashion and style. Today, let's see how we can keep things in proportion if we are plus sized and curvy. As well as length and width of clothing, there are three main accessories you also have to keep in proportion to your body size: jewellery, shoes and handbags.
Wear larger pieces of jewellery instead of dainty items as these will appear lost on you. Thin pendant chains and 'barely-there' bracelets will disappear on your body. However, Make the most of bold pieces that will make a statement. Do not shy away from dramatic pendants, necklaces and eye-catching cocktail rings.
In order not to look as if you raided your five-year old's closet, choose handbags which are in proportion to your body size. So please ditch those tiny and compact bags now. Large totes are ideal for you and can be carried over the shoulder, crook of the arm or by the hand. When carrying a bag on your shoulder though, double-check that it doesn't add too much bulk in the bust area. Et voilà!
Due to the extra weight to support and the fact that they are cut super tiny, thin heeled stilettos might be out of the picture for you. I can hear some of you lamenting that fact but comfort and safety is after all paramount. So what about wedges and platforms? They offer comfort, height and a variety of colours and styles. Court shoes, with a slightly thicker heel, will flatter your silhouette and bring a touch of elegance to your outfit. As an added bonus, they can be found in wide fittings too.
