Some of us choose positive thinking as our main goal or resolution for the new year. You may wonder why we think that positivity is so important. The benefits of positivity are plenty, both for the positive people themselves and for the people around them. Bringing
more positivity into our lives while at the same time removing negativity can help to bring our stress levels down. So it is worth the effort to change our attitudes from negative to positive.
But what can we do to be positive, or at least be more positive than we already are?
Here are my top 6 steps to achieve positivity and positive thinking:
Replace negative words and phrases by positive ones. This is easier said than done, I know. Sometimes, words come out faster than we think and out come all sorts of negative words. So it may take a little while with this one, especially if you are surrounded by negative people. Believe me, I’ve been there. So let’s try this for instance:
‘no’ by ‘yes’
‘I can’t’ by ‘I can’
‘I won’t’ by ‘I will’
‘I don’t have time’ by ‘I shall make the time’
Try this and see where it takes you. Replace the other negative phrases you are used to saying by positives ones when you can. You will feel better for it.
Give praise to others and yourself. We find it all too easy to criticise others without knowing the full story. Try to give other people the benefit of the doubt before chastising them. Instead, try to find something to praise them about.
Instead of listening to your inner voice telling you off all the time, try to ignore it and give yourself a pat on the back. Another thing, give yourself the permission to be praised by other people! Important, that one.
Find your good points. Yes, you do have them. We all do, but sometimes, we forget how thoughtful, generous and kind we are. Find your own qualities amid your negativity and bring them into the open. Show them to the world.
Have something nice to say about everything. The weather is wintry, cold and wet? Of course. It’s winter. Find something good to say about it nevertheless.
Notice the birds that are out in force around the seeds left in the garden.
Notice the little children’s smiles when out in the snow.
Notice the ray of sunshine trying to peer out from behind a grey cloud.
There is always a silver lining. Make it your mission to find it.
In the evening, find 5 positive things that happened during your day. Make this a habit and involve all your family members. You will all end up in a good mood and laughing. Don’t forget that laughing is extremely good for you.
Last but not least, smile! You will look happier, you will make other people smile, you will look more attractive. Spread happiness around you.
