Having grown up in France, I remember learning about this top style rule. All women, young and old, know about this principle and most observe it.
So, what is this top style rule that chic French women respect every day? And why is this
style principle so vital to our très chic appearance?
Of course, if you've read my books and regularly follow this blog, you've already guessed: mais oui, c'est la simplicité!
I like to think that this style commandment comes from my favourite style icon, Mademoiselle Coco Chanel. Her tour de force on the French fashion scene was, after all, to simplify the female garments of the day. She found that the clothes of the turn of the 20th century, not only far too restrictive in nature, but over-adorned. She set about to simplify clothes, in a way to free women from so much restraint on their bodies and unnecessary decorations. It seems that French women have been following her standard ever since.
So how does following this simplicity objective help French women's style?
Chic French women are partial to quality clothes. If we are going to invest good money in clothes, we reason that they need to last. They have to stand the test of time, both in quality of the fabric and in the design itself.
This is where la simplicité comes in. A simple, pared-down, slim-lined garment does not scream trendy, therefore does not go out of fashion fast. It has the basis to become a favourite piece that we go back to, time and again. Fashion comes and goes but these simple pieces retain their chic and elegance. They become true classics. In France, we adore our style classics, everyone knows that!
All these adornments on clothes, be they slogans (a non-non!), designer names or brands, bizarre cuts, too-trendy prints, chains, zips, colours of the moment and dubious colour combinations rarely last more than a season. As French women don't have a huge purchasing power, we can't completely change our wardrobe according to the whims of designers at every season. What we can do, though, is stick to the simple, classic but quality clothes that we already have and update with a few key items. However, these items have to adhere to our simplicity rule too. This way, they integrate fully to our already simple wardrobe and style.
This, my friends, is the secret to always have something to wear and to never look outdated. Simple French style may sometimes appear as boring or plain. However, French women would rather this than be labeled fashion victims!
