My tip for the day was going to be different. However, on waking up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala's clown-fest, this tip is writing itself today.
As always and in everything, if you heed the "keep it simple", "less is more" and "a little
goes a long way" tips, it is difficult to get it wrong. If you blatantly ignore these tips when choosing a ball gown however, you are heading for trouble. And the proof is in the pudding, as the photos of the pop and movie stars at the Met Ball clearly demonstrate.
The theme for this year was China: Through The looking Glass. But on seeing the gowns, you would be forgiven for thinking the brief for this year was to come dressed in the most garish, ugliest, and in some cases most inappropriate, ballgowns or costumes ever.
Don't get me wrong, the fabrics and embroideries on most of these dresses were exquisite. But the designs themselves were over the top, gaudy and, well, just wrong. Instead of subtle Chinese accents of embroidered flowers, colours and silks, we were treated to an extravaganza of sequins, faux fur and feathers.
Some wearers almost disappeared in ghastly creations as only their heads were visible over the "cacophony" of extra- loud add-ons, frills and bows. It was obvious and a shame that this important event was not taken seriously by many.
I found three main style categories, described as below:
1/ From one sartorial disaster to another, in no particular order, we had the predictable "look-at-how-much-I-show-you-today - yawn" exhibitionists, such as Beyonce (above), Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Miley. Just put it away ladies, please...
2/ Next, we had the jesters in laugh-out-loud fancy dress, and they were many. In the most farcical designs ever, we had Solange Knowles, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chloe Sevigny, Lisa Bonet, Kris Jenner, Madonna, Katy Perry and FKA Twigs. What was that about?
Please see below for examples of the first two main categories:
Exhibitionists and Jesters
So my tip of the day is, before choosing any ballgown, always be mindful of these photos of the Met Gala 2015 and to dress accordingly. Less is always so much more.

for the best dressed3/ To me, the best-dressed were those who mostly ignored the Chinese theme and wore what they look best in. Those who nailed it were Kate Beckinsale, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Candice Swanepoel, Jaime King, Rita Ora and the elegant Maggie Q. Some tasteful examples at last!
