Valentine’s Day is next Friday. While some of us will go out with our partners, others will go out on their first date. When you have a steady partner, it is easy to keep our makeup and jewellery fairly simple. However, when you go out on your first date, you want to impress
the guy, using every trick in the book. You have been watching those reality TV shows where women are overly made-up and larger than life. The trouble starts when you think you should do the same.
Well, we all know how easy it is to get it wrong, even when we try hard not to. So, here are some makeup looks that I have selected for you . Let's see what can go wrong with them.
Something many women are not aware of is that most men have simple taste and traditional views on makeup and such. They will not understand this type of nail art on their date’s fingers. That will definitely be too distracting for them. Nail polish has to bring beauty and seduction to the nails. A French manicure suggests natural and healthy nails. Bright red suggests femme fatale. What the nail art in this photo does is none of the above but gives the nails an air of the psychedelic Seventies. I am not sure whether your first date would be amused.
EYES AND FACE
Many girls and women have gone ‘Real Housewives’ makeup crazy these days. It may well be ok to wear this amount of makeup and false eyelashes on a TV show, but quite another to wear in real life. For one thing, you will scare your potential boyfriend away. The next, you will look totally fake. Spider legs on your eyes? Heavy liner on your lids? Hard blusher down the side of your cheeks?
Your date will probably think that you are too high maintenance for him, that you are out of his league or that he can't kiss you for fear of smearing the makeup. Who knows? One thing is for sure, he will not recognise the woman he asked out on a date. So please, for the sake of a second date, try to tone it down. You will only look the lovelier for it.
I always thought that lips had to look kissable on a date. This style of "lip art" however does not do this. Your lips will remain the centre of attention but for the wrong reasons. Your date will feel very confused and will not dare get any closer for a kiss.
Crystals, diamantés and glitter look fine on items of clothing and accessories, but on lips they look only one thing: weird. This craze may be the hot thing on Pinterest, but please, look to your classic lipstick and gloss when on a date.
Lastly, jewelry. As I said earlier, you probably want on your date night, to be the centre of attention. However, if you choose oversized jewelery that stands out too much, your face will disappear altogether. Your face cannot possibly compete for the limelight with this type of jewelry. It would lose the battle.
So go for understated jewellery, such as pearls which go with everything. Your face will stand out in all its beauty.
Whether on Valentine’s or any other day of the year, a date with a current or potential partner is the occasion to appear beautiful and glamorous. But, you don't have to hide your charm and grace behind a mask of makeup and accessories. The reality is that, if you over gild the lily, the lily will lose its natural beauty. Don’t you agree?
So, to get things right, refrain from too much anything. Rethink the amount of eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, blusher, lipstick and jewelry. Remind yourself of my main style tips, which are to always keep it simple, and less is more. Let your own beauty shine through.
My next blog post will show you some looks and outfits that do work for a date night.
