I am extremely grateful to all of you who read my posts regularly, and to those who have read my style tips in "How To Be Chic & Elegant". You have learned that French style is all about understatement and 'less is more'.
Chic and elegant French women don't really like to stand out in the crowd due to outlandish outfits, neon colours and short skirts up to there. If you do, you will be viewed in a negative way quicker than you can say Oh la la. It may not be to everyone's taste but French people are traditional on the whole, and even more so when it comes to fashion and style. Classics are preferred, with a trendy twist to keep things up to date. This is the norm in most parts of France, although there are subtle differences between some regions. For instance, in the South of France, we prefer brighter colours than in the North.
In Paris, the fashion capital of the world, women tend to be better dressed than in the province, but this can be said of every capital city in the world, n'est-ce pas? However, you will seldom see French women in sequins, long dresses and caked in thick makeup in daytime. This is an absolute non-non! â
âDo you want to know what spurred me to write this post today? The above photo of Kim Kardashian in Paris, wearing a pearl-encrusted Balmain dress. Et oui!
I am pretty sure that this outfit was deemed by many French people, as inappropriate for daytime. If her intention is to appear chic while in Paris, Kim Kardashian may have to learn about French style. I apologise for being this harsh, but this kind of get-up may work in flashy LA, but not so much in Europe, and even less in Paris.
This is such a shame. Kim is a beautiful woman, whose style , sadly, has gone awry lately. Hopefully, she will employ the services of a French stylist instead of her boyfriend, on her next trip to Paris.
Meanwhile, I've jotted down a short list of what NOT to wear while in Paris, in daytime anyway. For more tips on French chic, check out How To Be Chic & Elegant, Plus Size and Pear Shape.
An outfit that is heavily encrusted with pearls, sequins, and anything very shiny will not fit in with the chic, understated style of Parisian women. Keeping your outfit simple is the key in France.
When is short too short? When you can't sit down or bend down in a skirt or dress without showing your underwear to all and sundry. A bit of modesty and elegance goes a long way, ladies.
On the same vein as the above. A hint of cleavage is feminine. A whole bust thrust in your face is scary and dare I say it, vulgar. Remember, less is more.
Ripped clothes are not deemed "chic" in France, where this term originates from. If you do, you may not get as many admiring glances as raised eyebrows.
These bright hues should have remained in the gyms of the 80s, in my opinion. Have you ever seen a photo of a chic and elegant woman wearing these colours? Neither have I.
Fake anything, from eyelashes, hair extensions, nails, over-plumped lips, to breast and bottom implants, does not qualify as a French look. I am not suggesting that French women do not go down the fake route. However, when we do, it tends to look subtle and natural. Again, less is more.
Last but not least, makeup. In France, we use the no-makeup makeup. We do use maquillage, we love it, but we do not cake it on. Be kind to yourself and let your features and skin shine through. You will only look more beautiful for it.
So, if you are heading to Paris for your holidays, remember these simple tips. You will look good and blend in among les Parisiennes.
