Turning the pages of Vogue, Elle, Glamour and other such fashion magazines, I take a deep breath and let out a big disappointed sigh…
What is all this?
The photos of clothes in these glossy, worshipped fashion pages neither speak nor appeal to me.
I feel that fashion has long forgotten me, a woman who is no longer in my early twenties (and has not for quite a long time). The younger demographic is the ONLY one that fashion appeals to and is interested in.
Do you also feel that fashion has long forgotten you, now that your face and body are no longer smooth and perfect but show some signs of age?
Do you too feel that your sartorial needs are no longer met, but ignored?
Do you feel abandoned?
Do you feel marginalised, as I do, by the fashion industry?
Season after season, year after year, dresses and skirts get shorter and reveal more and more. Fine for the younger generation. We were young once. We wore such things then. But, what about us NOW?
How many times have you looked in shops at beautiful skirts and dresses in gorgeous fabrics BUT, alas, so revealing and with hemlines so short, that you could not think of wearing them? If only the hemline had been a few inches longer…or there had been more material!
If only the Fashion industry thought about appealing to our generation too.
We do matter…don’t we? Perhaps, we don’t!
The sad thing is that, through being ignored, many of you have given up on your looks altogether. Some of you have told me so.
You feel and look frumpy because you feel that there is nothing for you in shops.
You feel overlooked.
You feel forgotten.
You feel abandoned.
The result is that, with nothing ‘new’ to wear, instead of wearing blouses, skirts, dresses or tailored trousers, you slip into faded jeans, track pants or the dreaded leggings with shapeless T or sweat shirts.
You’ve given up.
I don’t blame you.
I understand perfectly.
Why try to find something new when there is nothing for you?
Where can you go for tops that are not transparent, do not show full top, side and under-boob, as well as your entire midriff ?
Where can you buy skirts or dresses that, once you sit down, do not reveal your knickers, as beautiful as they may be, to all and sundry?
Where do you get shoes that are comfortable to walk in without being dowdy? (I was already lamenting about this in my How to be Chic & Elegant book, back in 2011!).
Yes, we want to wear comfortable AND beautiful shoes, with any size of heels, low, medium and high! Is it too much to ask, Messieurs designers? Well, it pretty much looks like it…
Looking online or on the catwalks, you would be forgiven for believing that the fashion industry does not recognise, nor accept, these simple facts of life:
Women are not all aged 16: Surprising fact I know, but some women are even aged forty and over!
Women come in various shapes!
Women come in various sizes!
Women can be short or tall, and in-between of course!
Women have breasts!
And the last surprising fact: older women may not wish to dress like teenagers!
Yes, older women want to look beautiful and feminine (I can hear the fashion industry shuddering…)!
Yes, we want to walk into a room and get noticed. Silly notion, I know, right?
The truth is:
Fashion has forgotten us, older women.
Fashion is showing no interest in us and has not for a long time.
Fashion no longer acknowledges older women. And sorry Vogue, the odd photo of a 70-year old model does not count, other than showing you are patronising us.
So, what can you do?
There is something you can do. Something I, and millions of other French women, live by and have been doing for years and very successfully so, judging by the numerous articles on French women and French Style. This is something that has NEVER let us down.
This solution to your fashion problem, or the secret, as all non-French writers would call it no doubt, is, as always, simple.
Stop following fashion!
Start embracing style!
As fashion has forgotten you, so should you forget about following fashion.
Turn to style. A great sense of style will never let you down, unlike fashion which has and will continue to do.
Coco Chanel knew this 100 years ago!
Chic French women know this too.
They do not follow fashion.
They lead with style.
This is why they are admired as being the best dressed women in the world.
If you cultivate a great sense of style you will always, always, be wonderfully dressed.
You will always, always turn heads.
You will receive compliments.
You will feel beautiful again. Why? Because you are beautiful and always were, but had been made to forget.
So, are you ready to stop following fashion and embrace style instead?
Are you ready to be visible?
Are you ready to make an entrance again?
Are you ready to let your beauty shine through once again?
Are you ready to look feminine once again?
The next step is up to you.
So you are ready to lead with style! Fantastique!
Then step into the fold and The French Chic Academy…created by a French woman, bien sûr.
I know the style, the language and the culture. I understand what makes French women tick and what sets them apart. I know the way we think, shop and dress.
You will be given our style secrets. You will show the world that you are alive and kicking and that you want to be seen. No more hiding under dowdy clothes, mon amie.
Dump the frump. Vive le chic!
